Random Computer Shutdowns
« on: April 18, 2014, 02:31:24 am »

I'm trying to figure out what's going on with my friend's computer. I'm not very good with computers but he asked me for help so I'm trying. We were on Skype for the longest time, but the moment he starts to stream while playing video games, it would make this "click" as he would describe it. It'd click anywhere from once to several times, at random intervals, and then shut down.

His temperature would spike to 54 degrees C, but I do believe that's acceptable.

The weird thing is that it seemed to work perfectly fine when he took to a mechanic. He ran diagnostics, started up games, stress tested the computer, everything a-okay. He was able to get a few games of Hearthstone and League of Legends in, no sounds, squeaks, clicks, no shut downs.

These are his parts: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3rohV

This is what happens, it's not a good video whatsoever, but he said that around the 30 second mark, it is audible very briefly before his fans and computer shut down: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10203317470967227

He's tried it on at least two different power outlets and has left his case open while streaming/playing, same issue.

We're not sure what it is. Could it be a fan issue? PSU issue? Something else?

He has the latest drivers and everything. We've reinstalled Windows 7 OS, same thing.

Please HALP.

Thank you.

I asked him where the click was coming from:

"Last time I did that the click was on the Lower part of the PC. That's where the psu and hdd is. The hdd was replaced but still the sound happens."

I'm not at all sure about this, but it could also be due to defective RAM, which has gotten my computer all sour before. It didn't flat out shut down though, so that's pretty weird. Sounds more like a power supply issue, but since it didn't happen during stress testing... Well, not an easy problem. Most computers make a clicking sound when they shut down or reboot on their own accord, though.

Since it only happens if he streams and plays at the same time, i'd think that the issue is somewhere within the "performance" parts, such as RAM, CPU or GPU. GPU is unlikely though, because it tends to produce VERY VISIBLE effects on the monitor if it shits itself, and it usually manifests as a BSoD of sorts instead of a shutdown. RAM and CPU are possible, given that the computer needs to multitask in order to stream things. Can it handle running two games at once? It could technically also be faulty streaming software, but it'd have to be REALLY faulty in order to do shit like that.

This is all conjecture, though. 54 degrees C is in the hot end of what a computer likes, but it shouldn't be enough to make it flip out. Did the mechanic also test the "playing while streaming" thing?

Get some voltage monitoring tools, that might help you identify what's happening at the time of shutdown. Or just a system monitoring tool in general.

if it were doing it randomly without the game-streaming then the first place I would check would be the power supply, one of those going on the fritz does almost exactly what you described.

but since it's only doing it at certain specific times as mentioned it likely is ether the CPU or the RAM, and as it's happening while attempting two very heavy CPU tasks simultaneously my money would be on the CPU.
