The Great Dwarven Plug (Megaproject)
« on: April 22, 2014, 08:39:20 pm »

This project is fairly simple in its concept. A fortress in the sky is constructed. It must be uniform on all sides. (I suggest a 9x9 tower) The entire fort must live and work in this tower. All farming and storage is to be held here too. This tower will be supported by a single pillar which is attached to a lever somewhere in the skytower. After this is done the work on the shaft must begin. This shaft must be the dimensions of your tower. This shaft will go all the way down the the magma sea.

After this is done

1: Breach the HFS.
2: Send your glorious dwarves to do battle with the clowns.
3: After their inevitable defeat block the clowns from reaching the surface by smashing your entire fort on top of them.

Initial attempts were halted when we breached the HFS too early and they swarmed the skytower before any dwarves were able to pull the lever. :/

Has anyone tried this before?

Fort would need to be cast from obsidian iirc. Cause if it were constructed it would dissassemble itself.
Also if it hits smr wont that result in death?

Constructed tiles do collapse. I've had numerous issues with my towers being constructed in an odd pattern and punching a hole straight into the bowels of the fortress.

The whole plan is to just lay a bunch of rubble on top of HFS sealing the entrance.

And yes everyone inside is supposed to be part of that rubble

As I recall Bravemule ended with demons being released from the bowels of hell and the lever being pulled collapsing the tower on top of both the invading humans and the demons.

you need to dig out the tower from the ground  (easy to do with lots of z-levels), or cast it from obsidian if you want it to actually leave a pile of rubble more than 1 z-level tall.

Or you could construct a tower and then separately cast some obsidian on top.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

This makes me think of a pretty good weapon against demons, actually, using the same concept in a more serious, practical way:

1) Find the adamantine tubes
2) Dig a huge 60+ z level 4x4 (2x2 inside) wall around where you know the connection tube is.
3) Leave 2x2 natural stone (or cast obsidian) at the top on a support pillar.
4) Breach hell with a sacrificial miner, wait a few moments until all the demons are in the tube on their way up, and then pull the lever, and the same 4 blocks kill every one of them on the way down, yes?

Pretty cheap and easy, too.

Or do you have to actually be in the LANDING tile of a cave-in to be insta-killed? In which case that won't work, but an only slightly more difficult entire pillar type of thing (like a magma piston) would.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

If they're in the path they'd be killed. You don't need natural or cast stone to do it though. The only thing natural stone does differently than constructed tiles is form a layer of material where it lands. A cave in with 4 floor tiles is still instakill.
