Update on gem and glass weapons/armor?
« on: April 13, 2014, 08:29:38 pm »

I've been looking around the manuals and the forums, but I can't really find a comprehensive, up-to-date guide to the weapon/armor potential for the different types of weapons-grade materials. I'm asking because I don't get decent metal very often and rock weapons are crap. What are the stats for all these materials? Where can I find these stats and refer to them conveniently?

You can look up the stats directly in the raws, but the wiki page seems up to date.

Quick answer because I looked this up recently myself: Green glass is 20% weaker than iron and half as dense, clear glass is iron grade and just as heavy, crystal glass and gem is 20% weaker than steel but with crystal have 2x max edge and gem having slightly less than steel and not being magma proof.

I was afraid you'd tell me to look at the raws. It's just not easy or convenient to find data on a certain material.

Huh, I could have swore that gem weapons were actually pretty useless but that's not the case.

I guess I was under the impression that their sharpness but poor material made them amazing for killing animals, mounts, and severing limbs but any invader in full metal armor would be pretty much invincible to gem weapons. They would probably make great weapon trap additions.

Im not sure I have ever seen invaders in full armor. Anything that can cut limbs is somewhat useful if you are lucky. I have even had use of bone bolas in stopping sieges by killing mounts and severing the limbs of the enemy general.

I've killed trader caravans and ambushes with materials made of middle-tier jewels.

Jewel weaponry is my material of choice when I play. Gem Greataxes and Zweihanders...

Not so much, you can quickly use Notepad to search the raws. From a sometime-last-year post:
"To find something/anything in the raws, just look in the subdirectories (reaction, items, whatever).  I use Windows Search to find what I’m looking for and then drill down from the Edit window for specifics.  There are other ways, too.  It’s something worth learning – there’s lots of info there.  The Quick-Guides make it a lot easier now than earlier versions, but you’ll always be looking up a 'what is that?' new thing that shows up in game."

When I posted that, Putnam chimed in that he uses Notepad++ .  It’s not necessarily faster for DF but is also useful for other things.

I use notepad++ as well and many files are formatted for it and near impossible to read with the normal notepad. (no linebreaks)

I can and do use Notepad. I just prefer to have an easy data chart that I can refer to without having to use search functions.
