Crop the dimensions of it so your picture is square, not rectangular. As it's wider than it is tall right now, it looks like the relative size ratio is being preserved and so your picture doesn't look all that tall.

Just make a backup copy of the original before you start hacking bits off or resizing them and you'll be okay in the event that something happens.

Well unless I missed something you can only get pics from websites and I don't have my own,so I can't modify it.

You could download it, crop it in paint, and upload it to img.ie/imgur/image hosting website of your choice.

You can edit it using any image editor tool (Paint comes free with Windows, and even if it is terrible, it is better than nothing; other people will likely come with better free suggestions).  Then, you can save the product and upload it to any online image sharing site - Imgur, Photobucket, even Imageshack.  I haven't the foggiest what the maximum dimensions are for avatars here, but it looks like it's 80px square.  So, for instance, your avatar with a quick and dirty crop turns out a bit like...


But that's just a five-second job.  It loses that nifty framing effect on the left and right from the backdrop, for one.

Max size is 80x80. Logically, if your profile pic is 40x80, it won't get scaled wider. There's no need to do that.

Yeah.  Honestly, I prefer it the way it looks now.  Err, but that's just me, of course.  You don't have to take that seriously at all. ^_^

The free Paint.net is far better than stock paint for most uses, which includes resizing avatars. For advanced photo technomagery, you want GIMP (free) or Photoshop (notfree).

I use upl.co myself, these days. Own avatar isn't hosted with it, but most of the stuff I incidentally post is. It's quite painless, if the other sites are giving you trouble.

There,refreshed imgur and uploaded my modified picture which of course is different,doesn't even lose the neat parts on the sides.
