War Cows in training?
« on: March 24, 2014, 10:03:02 pm »

I checked my reports and noticed that "the Cow is fighting", and when I looked to see what was messing with my cows, it turned out to be another cow!

Vicious critters, too.. though I wonder whether they use hooves, teeth, or tail when one grips the other and shakes it.

My best guess is that they were fighting over a clump of grass in a near-depleted temporary pasture.

tame animals randomly strike other animals, and dwarves (any creature they wouldn't normally fight I suppose?)  if things get too crowded, not sure the exact amount of space needed to avoid that.  most common way this happens is too many animals on too small a pasture.
Remember that when animals have children they are automatically assigned to the pasture of the parent(s) so you may need to butcher or reassign the calves over time.

Or just have your cows and butcher every single child once you get a good number. If you just butcher the males, it works pretty well also.

This is why I only keep alpacas and llamas; they don't really attack anything, even when it's crowded in the pens.

They're good for everything, anyway. You can milk them. You can shear them. You can butcher their children for meat.

Just don't let them spit on you!

Did someone say llamas?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I prefer sheep. Less pastures that way. Or go for pigs, then you don't need pastures.

But you definitely have to watch for pasture overcrowding if you aren't the type who butchers often.

Even if your pasture isn't very crowded, there's a bug in tile selection where more often than necessary, two grazers target the same tile. They don't do what you or I would do, say "oh there's someone there" and move one tile to the left: they duke it out.

Low grazer values (=must eat often) and children following parents exacerbate this.
