Coffers and coin ownership
« on: March 21, 2014, 11:21:23 am »

Hello,
I have a fortress with magma forges and lots of gold.  I was hoping to give all of my Dwarves rooms with coffers full of gold coins.  Is there a way to get the Dwarves to take possession of the gold coins?

Dwarves only claim coins if the Dwarven Economy has activated, and that never happens in version 0.31 and later since the trigger was removed (which is just as well, since enabling it via memory hacking causes the game to crash due to other bugs in the economy code that were introduced in version 0.31).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

For all intents and purposes, in Fort Mode, it is impossible* to make the dwarves own the coins. The best you could do is fake it.

*memory hacking might allow it, but I don't know if there would be any severe problems with that

In the current version, the only items for which a dwarf will ever claim ownership are clothes - other items (crafts, coins, "exotic" clothing/weapons, etc.) are only considered when the Economy is active (which, as I stated above, does not happen).

With DFHack it is quite easy to assign ownership of an item to a specific dwarf, though it probably won't accomplish anything.

hey filling a nobles room with gold coins and then giving him the nickname "Scrooge McDwarf" accomplishes plenty :P  Maybe not in the practical sense but its the little things that matter afterall.
