Attack on Titan, English or Japanese?
« on: April 01, 2014, 05:30:21 pm »

Just finished catching up in the manga, to ch. 55, and wanted to start watching the anime (because goddamnit I CAN'T NOT WATCH IT!!!) only question left is do I watch it in Japanese with English subs or just the English dub version, which I hear is excellently done!

... and there ain't gonna be no flipfloppin' it's one or the other.

You couldn't have asked a more polarizing question.
The "Both have their merits"-crowd is pretty small in the subs vs dubs debate.
You could watch one episode with both versions and see what you like better.

Not sure if that's a life advice question though, we have an anime thread in the general discussion category.

I don't watch much animé, but I watched Black Butler lately, sub first, then dub. I prefered the sub's translation, but I also prefered the English voices. After watching both versions of the whole series, I just feel conflicted. I enjoyed them both pretty much equally.

So I'd say to you: pick whichever feels more 'natural'. If the English dub has been translated stiffly and too literally, the quality suffers. But if the subs seem like they were translated by someone with barely a grasp of English, that's also not going to be fun. Also, some characters in either Eng/Jap might sound really awful or annoying, so that's another criteria that would push me in one direction or other.

Also, don't get brow-beaten by fanatics. Some people get bizarrely militant when it comes to the sub/dub debate. It's very pointless and silly, so just watch it the way you'll find most enjoyable.

I'll throw my lot in with subs, that is how I watched it and I have no complaints related to annoying voices or the flatness of its translation.
I never watched the dub.

Mind you, my tolerance for such things may be higher then yours.

lots of talent is being throwing in for the dub, hopefully Eren would stop sounding like a whiny bitch.

I'm gonna have to go with English dub with Japanese subtitles superimposed over previous Chinese subtitles. And you have to watch it through a fish tank.

Damnit, now I've watched both versions, and they're both excellent D,:

... However I watched considerably more Sub than Dub, so i'll watch some more dub and get back to you guys.

Thanks for the suggestions though!
