Huh, neat. I've never seen temperatures core-by-core before.

If your cpu fan isn't running at those temps, it's either unplugged or burnt out. Shouldn't be too difficult to replace, unless computer surgery makes you nervous.

Or build your computer into a mini-fridge. Nothing could go wrong!

You mentioned earlier that your cpu fan doesn't run, yes? It's probably burnt out then. Needs replacing. If you're feeling truly paranoid you can take off yer heat sink and redo the thermal paste as well, just to be doubly sure. But that probably isn't necessary.

Time to do some closer observation of the fan, then. At those temps it really should be running constantly.

Alright, so I've opened it up and turned it on. the fan is running, but the heatsink is kinda sitting there (dunno if thats good or not) the tempature seems to be jumping around a lot when i use argusmonitor though it stays lower than it was yesterday, though it may be because the case is open.  it hasnt shut off yet though it usually takes a while to do

EDIT just opening chrome raised the average tempature by about 10C. and at one point it spiked to 70C. the fan is running. would therm. paste be my best bet right now?

if you've put a computer together, you should know how to replace the thermal paste at least. Also. STOP RUNNING IT UNTIL YOU FIX IT YOUR DOING DAMAGE TO EVERYTHING.

With that out of the way, depending on the model of the heatsink you may simply want to buy a new heatsink assembly and replace the fan, remove (properly, with isopropyl) the thermal paste, and stick the new heatsink (with thermal paste. You may have to apply it manually depending on what heatsink you buy) onto the cpu.

If that sounds like it's over your head you need to bring it in to a computer shop, explain that the cpu is running at 100c and they'll fix it.

Heatsinks are a solid piece of metal, they aren't intended to do anything above the molecular level of heat transfer. :P
