Can't bridge the lava?

I can't seem to place a bridge over the lava at all only get red X's, am I doing somehting wrong? I've tried many different ways of placing it.

You aren't using a sturdy enough material.  Even stone wouldn't be able to withstand the heat.

You need a bridge of steel.  Nothing less than that will do.
