Goblets not tradeable?
« on: February 04, 2014, 06:58:16 am »

So i was trying to make some money from gem-encrusted silver Goblets.
Ive around 30 or so finished, sitting in the jewelers workshop and another 50 in stockpiles waiting to be encrusted.

However, in the "move to depot" menu i dont find any goblet at all, not enrusted and not plain.

What am i missing?

EDIT: Appearently Goblets arent listed in the trading menu... i had to *s*earch them, and i found them.
And they are amazingly, stupidly valuable. All the hard work setting the encrustment up has paid off. My best goblet is worth 24k urists, with most of them ranging in the 5-8k department.
Now if only i had gold here....

Preferrably from a distance.

aren't they in finished goods section?

I tend to have a stockpile "for trade" near the depot, so I have no need of searching anything - it is all in the top of distance-sorted main list.

The trade menu doesnt show a "finished goods" section, and they arent in crafts.
When i select them by manual entry, it also doesnt show any category associated with them...

Than it means that we have another DF UI abnormality that we all love so much.
All I can recommend you is
post a bug into the tracker (or check if there is one) if you want it fixed by Toady,
or use DFHack's search function. It is nice and easy and adds search to almost all menus and lists.

Why don't you just sort by value instead of distance? Everything you'll want to be trade will be near the top so you don't have to look for goods by item category.

Do you have a mayor or other noble banning export of goblets?

Goblets (and totems) are not found in any of the sub-headings of the trade menu, they're only sorted into the "all" category that lists everything from skeletons to battle axes to encrusted statues.

TeleDwarf's is also my approach - just have a "trader junk" stockpile accepting common trade goods near the depot, everything in that pile will be at low distance and usually also high on the value-sorted list.

Oh, and don't bother making a new bug report - it's a known and reported problem already: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=65

The same applies for prepared food, btw. - it has no own entry; if it's stored in containers, it'll be found under "barrels" or "tools", loose prepared food is listed under "all" and is best found by 's'earching (provided by the standard game, no DFHack required) for 'roast' or 'stew' or 'biscuit', depending on which types of meal you made.

Yes, seems pretty backwards, since my perceived distinction between "goblets" and "crafts" was that goblets would be SIMPLER to trade and to manage mandates.  Worse, different materials will produce differently named products: goblets, mugs, and cups.

Yeah, im back to crafts too.
I just made them, because the caravan paid double for those in the comming year... after that, i could have stopped it but i was already losing interest once my king turned out to be another case of wall-in.

Ive rolled up a new world now and embarked in a tile where a river divides a terrifying from a serene surrounding, and i ´should have both in my embark.
Ill prolly go with toys this time and see what my king turns out to be. 125 years of history seemed ok to NOT have a sucker for once.

If a vampire king bothers you that much, you can generate a world with revealed history and check Legends before you embark.

And once you have embarked, you can consult the 'C'ivilisations listing. Your own dwarven civ will be in there automatically, and their "leaders" will be displayed. AFAIK, this will display special properties of your royalty, like "necromancer", or "vampire", or "goblin".

Toys are an inefficient way of generating wealth, you'll only get one toy (or instrument, when going that route) per crafting job, while "crafts" average two per job and mugs produce three each. At least mugs and instruments also take up a lot of space in bins, so a stockpile for them tends to take up a lot more space than pure crafts stockpiles; might be the same for toys.
On the flipside, a labyrinthine fortress desperately clinging to life in the middle of an evil zombifying mountain, protected with horrible traps and grizzled soldiers and doing all that to produce puzzleboxes and mini-forges is a pretty nifty concept.

Posting only to remark that I find it highly amusing that it is possible to store stews without any type of container.
"Hey, could you hand me that puddle of *goat meat stew* on the floor over there?"
"Here you go."
"Thanks."
