Materials and Dwarves Keep Teleporting
« on: February 01, 2014, 02:17:44 pm »

I believe my copy of Dwarf Fortress is haunted or something. I've seen evidence of mass transportation before, large amounts of material- typically stone and blocks- show up in areas with no explanation. Numerous of my dwarves, including two of my legendary marksmen, have gone missing for no reason- their bodies completely unaccounted before.

Is this a recorded bug with a solution, or do I need to wait for the next update?

There is currently a minor problem in that the veteran demons fighting in the corpse factory have failed to die in the 2 year battle and have become legendary unkillable gods of war. I may have misjudged this possible outcome.

Not that I've heard about. First of, how are those "stones" appearing, in what areas, etcetera?

And by missing you mean you can't look at them in the 'U'nits screen and zoom in on them using 'c' or that at the Units screen they're designated as 'Missing'?

Why shouldn't you write with a broken pencil? Because it's pointless!

Item teleport when you deconstruct some objects, it's a bug (and it can kill your dwarves if it's a stair that's being deconstructed).

Blue Dwarf has been happy lately. He did some !!science!! recently. He admired a fine forum post lately. He was enraged by a forum troll recently. He was upset by the delayed release of the new version of Dwarf Fortress lately. He took joy in planning a noble's death recently.

Had a longer post then had a gateway timeout.

Materials always vanish from a stockpile then reappear at random places- such as into other stockpiles, in my military tower, or on top of things being deconstructed. Just before my OP I saw a whole chunk of stone vanish from my stone stockpile and right in front of my expedition leader over fifty blocks away.

I have only found one dwarf that has vanished, this one stranded on top of my military tower. Any other vanishing dwarves I haven't noticed gone until the announcement saying they have been missing for a week. I have never found a body.

Upon reading, I got the impression that it really was some sort of haunting, as in the case of Ghosts but, in that case, you would have got a message (or see the ghost).

Other than you using teledwarf (a DFHack command) I can't seem to recall other reasons as to why people are missing and teleporting anywhere.

The materials issue sounds like the deconstruction teleport bug: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=5994
It's a fairly well-known bug by now, but keeps completely baffling people who encounter it for the first time.

As for the "missing" dwarfs - DF currently has no concept for what we'd consider "missing", the tag just means "is dead but the dwarfs have not seen the act and have not found the corpse (yet)". They died somewhere out of sight and the corpses are hard to get at or no longer extant. Typical examples are when a dwarf ends up in a pit without an exit or falls into a river and drowns - in the first case, since the dwarf couldn't get out, a hauler can't get in to collect the cadaver, in the second, the corpse is somewhere in the river and not "safe" to get. There's no teleportation involved.

You can check for the location of mislaid corpses by going through the "stocks" z-subscreen, predictably under "corpses" at the end of the list. Expand the listing via <tab>, assuming your bookkeeper precision is high enough, check for corpses attritubted to your missing dwarfs (such corpses will be listed by personal name), "z"oom to the location to see where the corpse is. This often gives hints to what has happened and why the corpse hasn't been retrieved yet, e.g. if the corpse is underwater or in an inaccessible pit.

If there are no corpses with the correct names, the very bodies have been destroyed, which can afaik only happen through fire or if the dwarf or body was caught underneath a lowering drawbridge and smashed entirely.
