Quantum stockpiling clothing
« on: January 19, 2014, 03:21:48 am »

Okay, so I have this Dwarven Actual Daycare, where I put all the kids and tell them to sit tight until they grow up. It uses these plans so they actually work, and for the most part it does (except when I turn on civilian alerts).

Now, I want to be able to lock the doors, but in order to do that I need to have a clothing stockpile in there for the beardlings. Now, I could just dump clothes in there, but I want to automate this. That means MINECARTS!

... but the gorram clothing stockpile won't feed into the minecart, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

The route definitely takes from the stockpile, definitely asks for the items the stockpile has and gives, and the minecart is definitely empty. What am I doing wrong???

My guess is that you didn't set desired items which should go into the minecart (Enter).
Also there might be a problem with order "...when full of desired items" because clothes are very small. That means even 1% may be 100 of the clothes (I am just guessing here). Or you didn't include the track into a burrow?
Next thing may be that no dwarf has hauling labor enabled (the one specified for minecarts).

I haven't tested it, but another problem could be that the clothes are tattered to the point were they are no longer considered clothing, in which case they are considered refuse. Dorfs behave very strangely with refuse clothing, sometimes stockpiling it in their room, sometimes ignoring it completely.

1. Nope, I've checked that like 5 times. It's definitely identical to the contents of the stockpile.
2. Eh, that's a placeholder. And there are absolutely no clothes in the minecart anyway.
3. That's just for guiding/pushing/riding vehicles, and I've tested that extensively; it definitely works.

Dwarves ignore those completely unless I tell them to dump somewhere. Most of the clothes are definitely unworn, and the rest are there because I did a mass [d]ump in the stocks menu.

Took a look, and it's because it's an armour stockpile. Clothing is only handled properly by minecarts if it's treated as "finished goods".

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense, because cloth tunics, trousers and shoes _can_ be selected by the stockpile interface "armour" register and the stockpile accepts them from the workshop under this heading, but the minecart will only be loaded if they're set as "finished goods" both at the stockpile and the minecart stop.

By changing the stockpile/route stop settings, i got the cart filled 43% and launched through "ride when at least 25% full".

This is likely to mess up other parts of your operation by making the clothier output stockpile compatible with other finished goods stockpiles, so inter-stockpile traffic will start.

PS - what happened to the poor stonecrafter? She took a whole season of treatments a year ago - both legs broken, left elbow (and other bones in the left arm) broken, lower spine nervous tissue ripped. Was it the kobold ambush?
