Cave in floor piercing mechanics?

If anyone has seen the community fort cathedral we have a bit of a problem requiring cave ins to solve. I need my cave in to bust through as many floor levels as possible. Is there a difference if I use a cave in piston 1 z level tall vs say 20 in terms of piercing ability?

A 1 z-level piston should punch all the way down, given that there are no walls, constructed or natural, directly below it.

Hmm thank you I hadn't considered that. So if a 20x20 piston fell on a 1x1 wall would the whole piston stop there or would it just stop one piece and the other 399 pieces continue falling?

When a cave-in starts, it destroys everything below it until it reaches a wall tile (i.e. no limit on how many floors it can pierce through), and each individual tile is treated as if it were its own cave-in (so your 20x20 floor will keep going with a 1-tile hole in the middle of it).
