Are hunger and thirst working in the current version? Do they matter at all?

??? They were always there. And they can kill you.

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.

They were removed in 31.17 and restored some time later.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Ok thanks, that's one of the problems with searching the internet for answers on a system this complex. Hard to tell when what you're reading was/is true.

You shouldn't be too worried about hunger as much as you should worry about your thirst, since I did a little test with starving my poor little character - and this character was still going strong after an ungodly amount of starvation.*
Meanwhile, thirst can and will kill you if you go on without drinking anything for a couple of days.

* It's worth noting that your accuracy goes to complete shit after all this starvation, so it's not like it's a good idea to starve. But a big water supply should be prioritized above a big food supply.

Neither should be a problem in most cases though, because after most fights you ought to have at least a couple of bloodsplatters ready for drinking - along with meat from your kill to satisfy your hunger.

hunger and thirst were gone? na jk, but yeah you don't really have to worry about them at all, get a bag and fill it from a river or a well and kill a few animals, bag cus it holds 50 water unlike the water-skin's useless 3 water.

"Engraved on the wall is a masterful depiction of a human by Logrin.  The artwork relates to Xotano Beastblood The Everseeing Dwelling of Clouds the human vampire recruiting some new human shields companions after his encounter with Ral Firewealthy the Warm Flicker the dragon, during which his face was melted off."

300 human/elf/dwarf/goblin/kobold bodies 20 random animal/fish/bird bodies and 3 dragon bodies all in one backpack. fun stuff.
