Dorfs and booze
« on: January 21, 2014, 11:14:41 am »

So, we have talked about the mysterious "origin" anvil on many occasions but what about booze?

How do you think that the sober water-drinking and first tea-sipping dwarven society reacted when they heard news of Urist McBrewer leaving a vat of plumphelmets in his closet for too long (and for some strange and dwarven reason decided that "oh, I am sure that it is still ok for eating") inventing a mysterious new liquid? How did they react to the sudden invention of this strange and mysterious substance that would be known as "alcohol"?

How did they regard the inventor? Was he a god among mortals, a hero of the newly intoxicated dorfenkind or the dorf that ruined everything? This very invention shaped the evolution of dwarvenkind, leading from the sober "proto-dorfs" to the drunken, "needs alcohol to get through working day", dwarvenkind we all know and love. How was dwarven life before the dawn of booze? Thirsty and sluggish?

The weredwarf Urist McUrist has come! A bearded drunkard twisted into minute form. It is crazed for booze and socks. Its unwashed beard is tangled. It needs alcohol to get through the working day and has gone without a drink for far too long. Now you will know why you fear the mines.

Et tu, Urist

This...
This is all innacurate, wrong on so many levels. Let me educate you over the actual history - as well as the tragedy - behind alcohol.

~~~
In the beginning there was nothing, and it was good.
Nothing was content to be for nothing was required, but in the void of nothingness there was an absence, an aching hole that required something to make it complete.
In nothing, there was a concept of something and nothing sought to make that concept complete.
For ten whole minutes - time, something that would not be rediscovered until much later - nothing laboured to bring into being that what it felt was missing.
That something burst, or rather bubbled into being as it rippled outward, replacing nothing with something.
That something was Alcohol.
Alcohol was, but simply being was not enough for it. It felt that as nothing before it, there was a void in its existance. Where as nothing had been a concept, it was very real and it required a very real solution to fill the void that it too felt.
Learning from nothing's mistakes, Alcohol sought to safeguard its existance by preventing itself from vanishing with the creation as it pressed ever onward with dizzying vigor to complete its own plan.
That plan was the creation of the dwarves, with skin and bones made from miscellaneous stones that Alcohol had created, feeling that it would need them for this task.
With a body of stone the one thing remaining was to provide life to the dwarves that it had created in the form of its blood - but the potent blood of Alcohol was much too dangerous precious to put into dwarves, so Alcohol created water, with what it diluted the blood that it gifted its creations with.
Jubilation!
The dwarves opened their eyes to see their creator and they knew it to be good, yet they too knew that something was missing.
Alcohol knew that simply validating its existance with these creations was not enough, so it sought once more to undergo the task of creating something, something that these dwarves would be able to call their own - much as it called them its own.
Alcohol created a sphere in the void, one that it placed the dwarves upon, and the rest as they say, is history.
Dwarves do not brew drinks to stave off sobrietry as many believe, but to renew their connection to their ancient creator and god, via this holy and reverent act.
I figure all DF worlds probably form within these. It seems the most logical place that alcohol dependant creatures would evolve, seeing as how they consume it like we do water. Dwarves are clearly an example of carbon-alcohol based life.
Yes, but that doesn't explain why dwarves are the only known alcohol dependent creature in DF.
I imagine that there existed a creature similar to dwarves, an ancestor if you will. These creatures lived and evolved from other creatures in the caverns. They would have migrated to the upper cavern layers before they were intelligent enough to create tools, as they would have been easy prey in the lower caverns. Eventually they developed simple tools as they evolved, creating clothes, and hunting the vast Draltha herds. Eventually they learned to work the land, harvesting cave wheat and plump helmets. Eventually, careless as modern dwarves are, some plump helmets or cave wheat undoubtedly fell into a well. Since the lowly un-evolved dwarven ancestors cared little for hygiene, the plants weren't removed from the well. Over time however, the plants (be it cave wheat or plump helmets) began to ferment, and as they fermented the dwarven ancestors took notice. Over time they experimented to create alcohol, and it became a staple in their society. It was their primary drink for so long, their livers and metabolisms adapted, and before the first pick was invented and modern dwarves pierced the surface, they were completely dependent on alcohol.
I like to imagine that if we as a society remained in a state where booze was all we drank (be it watered down beer or not) for hundreds of thousands of years, we too would have evolved to be dependent on alcohol.
