Largest and most dangerous animals
« on: January 07, 2014, 09:49:18 am »

In what (non-evil) biome would I find the most FUN animals? I want to make a fort focused on capture and training of big scary things, and therefore would like to maximize the potential.

Savage tropical I think, you can get giant lions, giant leopards and so on depending on the biome. Maybe even the once dreaded elephant, still shuffling about lost in morose memories of it's once mighty past.

his ass I won't bother to save.

savage savanna etc for giant lions, dingos etc, savage tropical forest for giant tigers and jaguars and the like are my favorite. Note that you should actively work to make animal men populations extinct because they take up way too much of what enters the map. Kill them any time you see them and let their corpses rot in the merciless sun/in the humid undergrowth as a warning to other animal people.

don't go for elephants unless you fix their grazing values

Pretty much any giant animal would do, especially predators.

While elephants aren't the horrors they once were, they're still formidable.

As for the animal men, you could either remove them from the raws (other than the underground ones) or reduce the population.

Removing animal men from the raws is a pain in the butt, as they're scattered throughout all the files. You can give the animalman creature variant the [AQUATIC] token, which will cut down on their presence considerably. You might get a group hanging around in the water upon embark, and you're probably going to lose the underground animal people, but they won't wander in and out on land.

There may be some other change you can add to the creature variant to make them all go away, but I haven't found it yet.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Arctic oceans offer a variety of seals - walrus, elephant seal, harp seal - which are pretty large naturally. Elephant seal, leopard seal and harp seal can also appear in the giant variety, and giant elephant seals belong to the largest creatures in the game, males are among the few creatures too large for pressure plates.

For varied and interesting creatures, i'd still take a savage tropical biome.

I think I'll go for some savage tropics. The dreaded elephants shall rear their terrible heads once more, but this time they will be allies with the dwarves rather than their most feared enemy. Fixing the grazer token isn't hard. Thanks for the advice about the animal men, too; looks like it's time to pull the old "Hernan Cortes and the Indigenous" trick.

good idea. animal men are making up half of the animals on my current embark and that is after I removed about 50% of their types from the raws. They're a plague in savage biomes

they're decent alternatives to beat up with training weapons if you don't have goblins though
