Squad Weapon Choices
« on: January 06, 2014, 02:20:21 am »

I've recently started paying more attention to military, and i'm confused. Should I try to have different weapon specialists in my squad, or should I make squads for each weapon? I have two squads at the moment; one is full of Axe Lords the other is full of Marksdwarves.

I'd always keep marksdwarfs apart as they use completely different tactics. You don't want them walking next to the melee guys into the melee. Otherwise it's a matter of preference and possibly convenience.
My current fort has only 8 melee militia and 6 marksdwarfs, so I just throw all 8 melee soldiers together in one squad.
When fighting goblins it doesn't matter much, but when you're dealing with FBs or Titans, some will be immune to some of your weapons, or some weapons may be more effective.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

I include 2-3 "elite" steelclad marksdwarves in each of my four mostly melee squads.  Since they've trained for years alongside melee dwarves, they have sufficient defensive skills to fight in the thick of combat.  The melee dwarves act as a moving shield wall, so the ranged ones don't have to fear elite bowmen the way my regular leatherclad marksdwarves (stationed behind fortifications) do.  Usually fights don't last long enough for them to run out of bolts, but on the off-chance that they do, they're more than capable enough in melee with their steel armor and crossbows.  Also, when fighting megabeasts, the steel marksdwarves do a great job of softening up the enemy before the melee dwarves go head-to-head.
