How to disable "smart" bin hauling completely?
« on: January 15, 2014, 11:45:19 am »

Hi, guys.
I'm sick of situations, when dwarf takes bin with finished goods and go across the map to collect wooden amulet. I'd like to disable it at all. I saw some options in d_init, but the more I read, the less I understand. Which numbers need to be corrected? It also concern seeds.
Code: [Select]
[STORE_DIST_ITEM_DECREASE:20]
[STORE_DIST_SEED_COMBINE:1000]
[STORE_DIST_BUCKET_COMBINE:1000]
[STORE_DIST_BARREL_COMBINE:1000]
[STORE_DIST_BIN_COMBINE:1000]

One possible way is to have two separate stockpiles.

The first is set up as to take from the workshop. The second is set up to take from the first.

The first, however, has 0 as the maximum number of bins.

(Personally, I let them haul my Gold bins, it's a good workout)

I have to write something... well here goes:
"A dwarf isn't a dwarf unless he dies the most !!FUN!! of ways", Quote unknown, possibly Armok.

Doktoro Reichard is quite pleased with making a Great Carbonite Trap

Why shouldn't you write with a broken pencil? Because it's pointless!

Unfortunately, there isn't a config option to disable this "feature".

My preferred solution is just not to use containers at all. A good quantum stockpile makes your dwarves behave just like they used to, and may have some benefits for framerate and ammo reloading as well.

I think the numbers you're looking at are about how rigorous dwarfs sort things in bins and barrels by type, such as each seed type it's own bag, not a bag with 6 different seeds in it. Meat and plants don't get mixed in a barrel etc, but crafts do end up with clothing. This is most likely due to how low or high those numbers are

Unfortunately, it's not.  Hauling doesn't train physical stats.  You'd think it would, but it doesn't.

So sad.
Anyway, thanks for the answers, beards!
Well, there are not so many solutions.
1. More advanced logistics.
2. Do not use bins (I haven't any experience in it, as I like compact fortresses. Is it really playable?)
3. Build workshops very close to eaсh other. Without stocks. I used to try it with Furnace-Forge.

2.the traders bring bins of leather.  just easier to purchase the bins.
3. some things actually :Do: make sense to stockpile.  Leather/cloth, for instance.  Thread, on the other hand, should not be stockpiled, at least not untill there's an option to stockpile only dyed thread.

This is a masterwork ledger.  It contains 3719356 pages on the topic of the precise number and location of stones in Spindlybrooks.  In the text, the dwarves are hauling.

I'm now in a position where my industry is of such efficiency that whoever goes to pick up -anything- is not going to pick up just one piece of any item. I hardly get any cancelations and it's such a pleasure to see them clean up a siege without picking every piece up seperately
