Starting Afresh
« on: January 04, 2014, 05:04:59 pm »

It's been a while since I played and I'm having trouble striking earth. What is the first few things you designate before unpausing? What are some beginner megaprojects that you've done sucessfully?

Tl;dr, I want to start playing again, but whenever I start my fort I get into a rut and stop.

Define "rut."

Usually I start my forts out with a minor project, like finding a few layers of stone without veins/MICROCLINE GARBAGE, dig out and smooth a multilayer hall or underground defense tower. Another project is to race to build a fort near the magma sea / third cavern (though I flooded that fort when I dug up into an underground lake...)

Rut being boredom caused by "I can't make a good fort out of this" sort of feels.

Usually the first project I have to work on is getting through a damn Aquifer

It's a dwarf.  Their natural habitat is "trapped on the wrong side of a wall".

Flinging children halfway across the map to land in magma is good, wholesome fun, but extramarital reproduction?  Why, that's just unseemly!
