note that a baron(ess) without item preferences may instead demand a piece of furniture made from a prefered material. In general, not a problem, unless they demand an iron bed in their rooms. Plus an easily fulfulled mandate makes the baron(ess) happier and less likely to freak out over something like room quality. Note that I wouldn't mind high boots mandates. I'd just set some trainee armorer on making a few copper ones and melt them down when he's finished. I really don't mind being reminded that I should train spare armor smiths as a safety measure against the master suffering an accident.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

And then everyone melted.

All nobles can make demands. It's a bit of a problem with nobles without item preferences, because they'll be lacking the fairly large happiness boost of fulfilled mandates, giving them less of a buffer against the potential unhappiness of ignored/impossible demands.

Nobles with a preference for a common weapon or armour piece are really a pleasure to work with, especially with .34.11's working nobles - you can give them the required labours to fulfill their own mandates. This gives them mandate happiness and work satisfaction happiness, has an improved chance of producing higher-quality items and of course produces items that are useful for your fort and won't normally interfere with your trading habits, either.
