Do you have enough space in stockpiles?

The fortresses are penal colonies.
The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.

they don't usually abandon stuff in a corridor unless they're being scared by something or they're very moody or such from not having enough food or booze.

can't trade them?
...
Try forbidding them, waiting about an in-game day or two, then reclaiming them.  or (d)ump them to a one-tile garbage zone near your trade depot.

This is a masterwork ledger.  It contains 3719356 pages on the topic of the precise number and location of stones in Spindlybrooks.  In the text, the dwarves are hauling.

That.  If a dwarf is hauling a heavy bin around and gets scared (e.g. by a kobold thief), he may drop the bin and run off.  Then a new hauling job gets created to finish hauling the bin to wherever it's supposed to go.  It's likely some other dwarf will take the job.  However, if whatever scared the first dwarf is still there, then the second dwarf will get scared too....

You need to check your announcements/messages to see what's happening.

Wouldn't they also drop the bin when being very hungry or thirsty? Maybe your bins are too heavy (e.g.made of lead) or to heavily filled and they can't finish the hauling job before craving some food or booze.

The solution is to just not make bins. Ever. You don't need them and they create more problems than they solve.

Well, if you're going to abuse minecarts and garbage dumps to quantum stockpile all of your items, then I suppose you wouldn't need bins, though it's going to make it a lot more painful to haul large amounts of goods to the trade depot...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I use them for things that either take up a large number of bins (the bar/block stockpile is notorious for this) or things that otherwise take up lots of space or are not otherwise stackable like wood.
