Best Armor Uniform Setup?
« on: December 31, 2013, 12:44:18 am »

After looking at the wiki, it looks like the best is as followed:

Armor
1 x breastplate
3 x mail shirts
6 x cloaks

Armor (cheap)
6 x dress
3 x robe
3 x cloak

Legs
3 x long skirts
1 x greaves

Legs (no foreign items)
2 x trousers
1 x greaves

Legs (cheap)
2 x trousers
1 x leggings

Helm
1 x helm
6 x hood

Gloves
1 x pairs of gauntlets
1 x pairs of mittens

Gloves (cheap)
2 x pairs of gloves
1 x pairs of mittens

Boots
1 x pairs of chausses
1 x pairs of high boots

Boots (no foreign items)
1 x pairs of socks
1 x pairs of high boots

Boots (cheap)
1 x pairs of socks
1 x pairs of shoes

My question is when making a custom uniform so I have to add cloak 6 times to make them grab 6 cloaks?  I feel doing it this way will cause you to have a giant list.  Besides that, I'm unable to make more then bronze because of the materials around me but I have some steel pieces of caravans;  Would it be better to just set it to metal for the materials so they grab the highest tier metal or is there a better way?  Thank you in advance, much appreciated.

one note that noone seems to remember to add to the armor suggestions, or every one misses when reading some

Every piece of armor adds weight and every piece of armor further slows a dwarf down who isn't trained in armor use skill, which is one of the harder ones to train effectively. If you put a recruit in the whole list of what s/he can possibly wear, that recruit is as good as dead.

Otherwise, yes, if you want to make optimal use of all the layers, it turns into a big list, you have to add everything you want them to wear, though you need to keep replace clothing/over clothing in mind. For optimal use, you'd probably want replace clothing and then you need the big list

Also note that you can't reserve leather clothing (hoods, cloaks) for the military, civilians may grab them too

You can set it to metal in the beginning, but realize they'll grab the most expensive piece, not the best protection. Usually that doesn't matter, but goblins or caravans may bring copper chain shirts with for example diamond decorations, making them worth more than a steel shirt

Oh, that's how they decide. I was wondering about that. Guess it's time to go stud all the steel armor with gold.

Even worse, being slowed by armor slows the rate at which they train  (including the Armor User skill).  It's a vicious circle.

That said, I do wonder whether anyone has done arena mode testing of dwarves with sane uniforms (something like 1 helm, 1 mail shirt, 1 greaves, 1 pair high boots, 1 pair gauntlets, 1 iron battle axe, 1 wooden shield) vs. dwarves with multiple layers of armor, at varying Armor User skill levels, to see when (if ever) it becomes useful to add additional layers.

Thanks for the info, was hoping there would be an easier way to add everything but it doesn't look like it'll be that easy.  So would my best chance be to specify the material to a specific metal or just try and up the worth of my best armor with gems?

If you're making steel armor, you generally don't have to worry about them grabbing anything else, because steel has a really high material value (30, the same as gold) in DF.

sadly i have no metal besides tin, copper, and zinc.  All the weapons, armor, and ammo I've been crafting has been bronze.

yes, they can even use shields. In general, make shields, they're much better at deflecting bolts and if you make them from leather or something it will not weigh much, which is only bad if you want them to kill with a shield bash. Leather or wood shields are perfectly capable of withstanding dragonbreath, but may combust from the resulting grass fires.
