Is an e-reader that uses electronic ink more durable than a tablet?

I think e-ink screens are inherently more durable than tablets due to a lack of shatterable glass/plastic. Also, the e-readers tend to be lighter and less tech-packed, which means less force transfer and thicker molded plastic cases.

If you're trying to decide between them, the decision should come down much more to what you're trying to do. Reading on an e-ink screen is worlds better than an LCD, plus benefits with battery life.

e-ink screens are made of glass and are pretty fragile.


If you ask me the only aspect in which e-readers trump tablets is battery life, which is useful for long journeys. Otherwise I'd stick to tablets.

Plus, tablets can do things that e-readers cant.... like be paperweights-DAMMIT.

If you need a dedicated reading device than an e-reader has numerous virtues, like having amazing battery life (weeks without a charge), the ability to be read easily in any sort of light, etc.

I've had my Kindle for two years and use it extensively when traveling.  Reading on a tablet would drain its battery (since you'd need its backlight on) pretty quick.

But yeah, two years with no real scuffs or issues.  Plus, Amazon is particularly kind in allowing you to exchange dud Kindles back in for new ones.

My tablet's battery lasts pretty long. I charge it every two days or so. It's not that of a big deal in the day-to-day business. The problem comes if you're due for long travels without possibility of recharging.

On top of the many already mentioned benefits (wih I can confirm) e-ink is inherently simpler and thus more robust in it's core principle. Rather than having a lamp that shines through liquid crystals that are then filtered differently, or nanometer antennas at the precise frequencies of various coloured lights, you simply have an electromagnet that pulls on magnetic particles sort of alike and etch-a-sketch.
