Marksdwarf !Science!

Has anyone ever looked into whether or not the height of a marksdwarf above what they are shooting at makes any difference in damage or the ability of the enemy to accurately return fire?

It currently doesn't, because bolts/arrows are on the old projectile system and mostly ignore gravity.

The sight range is 20 tiles spherical, so a marksdwarf in a tall tower can't see as far along the ground as a marksdwarf 1 z-level above ground.

This may change if Toady updates bolts/arrows to the new projectile system. However that would make crossbows useless for long-range underground engagements because of the parabolic arcing.

One difference it does make is that ( low skill) enemy rangers can't run up to your fortifications and shoot through them if they're on a different z level

Having marksdwarves stand a z-level above the ground allows them to shoot above trees and other such obstacles.
