Server hosting issues
« on: January 02, 2014, 05:52:13 pm »

I used to be able to host servers for me and my friends. Several months ago though, they stopped working. I can't host on Minecraft, Terraria, or Starbound. It hasn't been a problem up until recently, because my friend got Starbound. He's generally poor with computers, and my friend who usually hosts doesn't have Starbound.

The ports are correct, and I don't know what problem there could be with the router/firewall.
Google hasn't been to helpful, many of the things I've looked at have been for specific games.

Anything happen several months ago around the time you stopped being able to host them?  What happens now - are there error messages, or do they appear to work and just not allow people to connect?  Can you connect to your own server, from your own machine?

Have you tried turning it off and turning it back on again?

Nothing changed that I know of. I don't get any error messages, and I can connect, but other people can't see the server.

I had enormous connectivity problems recently that were fixed by reinstalling two games with a lower DirectX version. Then again, I was still having some problems and all I did was completely uninstalled one of the games (Planetside 2) and everything worked again. Which makes me think it wasn't anything to do with DirectX.

Further, it seems like a lot of game-house-companies like Sony Online Entertainment, and Turbine, have multiple games using the same launcher and cash shop implementation, which may mean if the problem stems from one of those it could be any SOE game doing it for example.

My symptoms looked a whole lot like a router setup, router firewall, PC firewall, or antivirus problem but it was actually just PS2 doing something. Have not had a problem since.

Try entirely disabling Windows Firewall. I've had problems with that. If this is it, you can reenable and try to configure it.

Also, make sure that your computer's IP didn't change in the meantime. Sometimes that happens when the router resets itself... and then the router's port forwarding will be sending traffic to some other computer. At the moment that's all I can think of.

What's your anti-virus?

Microsoft Security Essentials was preventing people from connecting to my Terraria server until I disabled its active protection. Which is surprising, because MSE generally doesn't mess with anything.

If you've got anything more...robust than MSE, that's probably the issue. And by robust I mean, is more of a pain in the ass.

I'll try that, I do have MSE

EDIT: I turned off the MAPS setting, and that didn't work. Is that what you meant?
