Marksdwarf ammo issues
« on: December 26, 2013, 03:16:45 pm »

Hello, I am a long time lurker who has been having tons of fun without violence with my marksdwarves. I'll try to keep explanation short:

At some point earlier in this fortress, my dwarves did arm themselves with ammo, and fire it in both practice and in combat.
Later this stopped happening, I noticed when I tried to execute prisoners behind fortifications and none of them could reach the target because of their lack of ammo. My dwarves correctly equip everything else, quiver and xbows included, but will not pick up bolts.

My current marks squad has 8 members,200 bolts, no bolts forbidden, and no bolts for hunters.

I have tried:
Stockpile of bolts on top of them
Bolts not in stockpile on top of them
Making new bolts
Making new squad
Forbidding and unforbidding bolts
And a few more things Ill add if I remember them.

Also: Very strange phenomenon, Sometimes I will catch one of my marksdwarves (usually the captain) walking waay away from my fortress (like half the 6x6 local map) with something like "Equipping personal items ". Eventually he stops, and leaves behind for example a sheep wool quiver and 31 iron bolts.. No idea what is going on here, but it might be related. There are random specks of littered items around my outer rims.

Thanks a ton, let me know if you need any other facts

What sorts of bolts do you have, just metal, just wood or what?
Also, are they hunters?
Do you have quivers for everyone?

You may be having issues with the dwarves making "poor" choices about which bolts to obtain.

Try bulk-reclaiming all the bolts scattered around outside, then immedately bulk dumping them afterward, then set general refuse options to collect refuse from outside.

Atomsmash (or melt) the old bolts, then make new ones.

See if the problem persists.

I have a few hundred bone, wood, and various metals, mostly bronze and iron.
Hunter mining and wcing disabled on all of them
All have quivers in their inventory.

Ill try your suggestions wierd, although the only bolts left outside are the ones they took there (as explained above), and they dont seem to want to take those.

One of the problems often seen with hunters and marksdwarves is that stacks of bolts DON'T restack after being fired, so when a marksdwarf or hunter "reloads" using recycled ammo, he will only pick up a single bolt to put in the quiver, then fire it, and then spam the "out of ammo" message.

The elimination of all these old bolts makes sure that bolts are in proper stacks, so they get equipped propery.  It is also a rather ham-fisted solution to any "possible" craziness that might have happened to the site item array the game queries when assigning which physical items get used for what purpose, by forcibly removing all items of that type, until there are NONE left of that type, and then creating brand new ones to replace them.

Make a copy of the save before attempting said radical solution, and if it does resolve the issue, file a bug report, and attach a link to the save.

Thanks, sounds plausible, trying now.
Also my marksdwarves whenever going on duty and are in 'pickup item' state, the have bow and quiver equipped, walk far away from my base, drop the crossbow and or quiver, change to the 'armed' image (on my graphic set) and walk back. My bows are scattered across the wilderness, even if I have extras..

Having this same problem as well.  Had this problem in EVERY fort I've built since I first played this game 3 years ago.  It really needs to be fixed, one way or another.

Someone advised me that dwarves won't pick up ammo out of bins.  I eliminated all the ammo bins in my fort, but still no pickup.  Very frustrating.

Toady, please just let us assign ammo through the uniform screen!

Still havent been able to find a fix. Dwarves arent really even able to dump bolts because whether I dump them directly or through stocks screen they randomly become 'F' and the 'D' disappears randomly after a few minutes. This is really frustrating.

Try deleting and re-adding the ammunition (as in, the entry in the military/ammunition screen) assigned to the squad. I had a similar problem, when marksdwarves stopped picking up bolts out of sudden, despite claiming them, and this worked.
