If you are lazy (and don't already know how to mod) you could learn how to use Rubble (see my signature), when properly used it can make modding much easier and save lots of time (plus it comes with tutorials and examples)

One of the most helpful things I have ever used was Hugo's wiki rip, all the important (to modders) stuff from the wiki in an easy to use offline format.

1 I do know how to sorta mod (and can probably figure out the rest in 2-3 days if I didn't considre it a waste of time due to me being lazy)my first modded (And last) creature was a modified human who I added a tail (though I realize that I'm not entirely sure where said tail WAS on the body) and said tail had a stinger and said sting turned anything it stung into another of the same creature, would've probably added them a invasion creature if I wasn't lazy.

2 I clicked that link and I can't figure what's it's rambling on about

The overview should cover it, basically it's an insanely flexible modding utility that can do... FAR too many things to list here. If the readme (that post) is tl;dr you might not want to use it though, the documentation just gets more detailed from there ;)

As far as cool stuff you can do...
Current projects of mine include:
bee keeping workshops, an experimental replacement for vanilla beekeeping
landmine creatures, go BOOM! when hostiles get near ;)
new metals (alloys mostly, for example mithril made from addy and steel)
new industries like a factory that makes batches of basic goods and a sawmill that makes wood industries more efficient

In any case DF modding if a very broad subject, just do like I do, download everything that looks cool, rip it apart and rebuild it so it fits your needs/wishes.
