Sub-standard craftsmanship??!! HERESY!!
« on: December 30, 2013, 12:42:43 am »

Heya :D been having a little trouble equipping my military with good stuff. I was fortunate enough to happen into a sizable vein of iron ore fairly early, so I started production rather quickly. Unfortunately, 90% of the stuff they make is either mangled, heavily worn, or worn even after just being made. Is this due to low skills levels on the part of my smiths? Or is it something else?

No, that's not normal at all.  In fact, the only way that I know of for metal armor and weapons to become worn is to put them in a refuse pile.  I think they naturally degrade over something like a century, but that might have only applied to wood and cloth items.

Natural wear can occur if an item is made of something that is damaged by heat or cold and you put it in such an environment.  I've so far only seen this for wooden workshops and items in an extremely cold biome.

Are you using any mods of any kind?

Are you somehow putting the armor in a refuse pile? The only way that armor would get worn like that is if it was in a refuse pile at some point.

Maybe observe the stuff being made and see where it goes. I bet that there is a stockpile somewhere that you accidentially set as a refuse stockpile as well.

well my main stockpile is zoned to allow stuff like wool and bones, but nothing that rots. Also this is only over the course of a few months so its should be "rotting" or anything...at least not that fast. This also seems to be happening to my leather armor stuff too...

bones are allowed by turning 'refuse' on in the stockpile options, making it a refuse pile, making stuff degrade and disappear in that stockpile. Make a seperate stockpile for bones and all related products.

if refuse is lit, at all, it's a refuse pile and will degrade your armor.
I think armor *Does* decay over time, but only over a hundred years or so.
