Being an NPC would suck. PCs are sociopathic bastards. Chances are your AI would be so bad that the main character would decide they're better off just blowing your NPC up with sufficient explosions.

Or blocking you in with crates until the quest is over, then letting you run through an empty, blood-splattered dungeon to finish the escort portion.

Man, I would love to be typecasted as a prostitute in one of those. I'd be there, just waiting. My eventual explosive death is inevitable, all I need to do is make it count. One day a bright pink tank that had been commandeered by the protagonists for dicks and giggles would begin eating its way up the street, and alongside the screams and flashes blaring across the scream, across oceans two puzzled blokes would speak in unison, mashing buttons to get out as a hooker jumped from a building and planted a landmine on the turret.
'Did that hooker just scream hl3 confirmed?'
Boom.

Edit:  And that's a best case scenario for mainstream stuff.
