I felt i was not a newb anymore when i could see dwarves and doors and blood where others only see a screen full of gibberish.

I dunno, the game still throws little surprises at me now and again that make me feel like a newb.  Like when I walled off the first cavern, I had a few deaths due to mass-designating the removal of scaffolding.  I thought I was being cautious enough by doing 1 layer at a time.  What I didn't realize is that I still needed to remove every other scaffold piece, otherwise, some dwarves had their scaffold removed right under their feet :(

Still, I suppose I stopped feeling like a total newb when I played through 2 in-game changes of ages (2nd Age of Legends from the death of a dragon, then the 3rd Age of Myth from the births of my first fortress born ones).

I had the great unnewb epiphany when... oh yeah, right. I'm still a newb. Never mind.

When I abandoned because of being bored.

The fortresses are penal colonies.
The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.

When I managed to get a duke without every having to pause the game because an emergency had cropped up. I paused the game for other reasons, but never panic-paused.

When I started attempting my own megaprojects/stupid dwarf tricks instead of replicating others/following other people's suggestions.
