No fungus in any of my caverns
« on: December 12, 2013, 01:03:33 pm »

Hello all,

I'm not sure if this is a bug or just me getting some bad luck so I thought I would ask here.

Is there any way to get the game to generate some lovely underground plants if all three of my caverns are just filled with barren muddy ground?  Or is this fortress doomed to only having above ground forestry?

(I don't know that it makes a difference a cavern in my previous fortress (which fell to a super fun necromancer ambush) in the same generated world was filled with lovely flora)

If it's all three caverns, then above ground is the only play you'll have grass. Typically, from my experience, this happens when there is no water in the cavern. Though I have had it happen from time to time when there IS water, this is more rare [again, only from my experience.]

I don't think it's a bug, as if you were in a real cave that was bone dry, there probably wouldn't be a hell of a lot of plantlife around. If you want fungus, you'll have to embark elsewhere [far elsewhere, so you don't dip into the same area of caverns.]

You could try to remove some of the mud by building a floor or a wall over it, then removing it.

I've seen that yield a sand/clay/loamy/etc. patch before. It might not work, but it is worth a try.

I once found that after dragon fire exposure things started growing, I don't claim to understand what was happening. Although this was in an embark where not all cavern layers where dry.

I'd try BlackFymes thing, I however have problems with trees and such growing in my dorfs and causing them to starve.

I don't understand why you need magma.

Well done OP, you've inadvertently weaponized ghosts.

Growing IN your dorves. Ouch, must be uncomfortable ^^
I tend to pave (or roadbuild) earthen corridors, small rooms and doorways to prevent the "blocked by a tree" death (and the "ugly multicoloured clusterfuck fort death" too).
