dump item not collected

I am still experimenting with clearing mined areas with mass dump and un-forbidding as needed for stone crafts using the stocks menu.  It works fine in the beginning but I get to a point where the dwarfs will simply not collect some random stones.  Normally the idler number goes to zero and they swarm the area.  THESE stones are labeled for dump, they are accessible, large pool of idlers.  The stones CAN be collected for use in building after removing the dump designation.  Once it happens the first time in an embark, there is often a stone or two left after any mass dump order. 

I could test to see if the problem is the item or the tile with a little !science!, but I'm working around with regular stockpiles for now

I've had the same issue.  I got around it by designating a stone stockpile that only accepted links, then creating linked stockpiles right under the stones that wouldn't budge otherwise.

Have you been building walls, floors, or other things made of stone?  It's possible that your dorfs have already marked these stones for use elsewhere.  The easy way to check is to loo{k} at one, and if the tag [tsk] is visible beside it, it's already marked for use - and consequently, won't be dumped.

I would have guessed in THAT situation that it would not have accepted the dump tag.  But since it was consequently able to be selected and built into a wall, this was not my particular issue
