As an outsider, you start off with no backpack or armour. You don't even start with pants, it's just you and your two weapons; your spear and your dagger. So first priority is armour. The best place to get armour is from castles. They won't be hostile unless you've angered the civilization, and there is plenty of equipment that you are allowed to take, ranging from weapons to armour and clothing. The loot can be a bit random, but sometimes you will even find a backpack to hold your things in.
As for bogeymen, they only appear if you are alone. If you are traveling with at least one companion, they should not bother you. Alternatively, they will not appear on beaches or in mountains, so if needed you can camp out in one of these locations. They also won't appear indoors, and will disappear if their target goes indoors, so sleeping in a cave or a lair is also an option.
Speaking of companions, while having some around is nice, it will also increase the number of combatants that appear when you are ambushed, both by wildlife and by bandits. Fewer followers mean fewer enemies when you are ambushed. Though you can only be ambushed while fast-traveling or waiting/sleeping, to my knowledge.
Tombs are most definitely for advanced adventurers, due to the traps and the angry dead. The same principal goes for necromancer towers, but without the traps. Though if you are a night-creature (vampire, were-beast, necromancer, or thrall/husk) then the undead will ignore you. The necromancers might not be, but they will be less of a challenge without their zombie support.
I think that's all the info I can dump off of memory. Oh, one more thing, you can turn off bogeymen in the advanced world generator by setting their number of different types to zero.
