Nevermind, it was just a house full of Bleak Men and I was viciously slaughtered.  :'(

Night trolls from the sound of it. They're night-creatures created in worldgen with a random name and appearance. They capture people of various species of the opposite sex and convert them into a spouse with which they reproduce.

I looked through lore mode and apparently one of my adventurers killed one that was 1 years old!

Oh that reminds me, Today I almost defeated a mummy in a tomb, if I defeat it does it mean all it's skeletal servants die with it?

No, you'll still have to take down the raised dead. Though it'll be easier because the mummy won't be raising them back up.

Really? Would it help to have a lot of companions? Because I normally travel alone and I'm pretty capable of dealing with bogeymen alone.

I haven't fight mummies yet, but when dealing with necromancers, companions do not help at all.

But in the cases of mummy attacks, companions can be the one to wake the mummy up and get the "you feel terrible" curse, which for a PC adventurer is basically a retirement / epic death notice.

That curse really ought to have a better name given you are pretty badly cursed, permanently. Yeah get the companions to do it, that curse cripples.
