Starcraft: Brood War and Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness are alright for LAN. If you can get the fan-made patch for it and work out the kinks Dungeon Keeper is also an alright game for LAN. Outside of that I don't know as I've only played RTS on LAN.

Doom 1 and 2. Quake 1,2 and 3. Command and Conquer Tiberium Sun and Red Alert II.


EDIT: I can't believe I forgot Shogun (1), Medieval(1) and Rome(1) Total War

Thanks for all the replies. Half of them didn't work due to messed up drivers, and we settled on Terraria.

The first unreal tournament is a good choice as it runs like lighting on ancient pc's and really easy to play.

Doom or another doom like are great fun and are really small (you know like if you ever have to play a game off a USB stick, cos that is totally not something you'd do ;).)

I concur. It runs like a charm even on a 2000 with 256MB ram and a dinky little single core processor. (UT)
