Are you downloading from here: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/df_34_11_win.zip ?

Are you on Windows 7 or another version?

Note that you don't have to "install" df.  You just extract and run it.

ps - let me suggest considering PeridexisErrant's Dwarf Fortress Starter Pack r41

It gives lots of great utilities, graphics packs, and more.

Quote
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download and unzip the folder - there's no further installation procedure.
2. Open dfhack.init in the dwarf fortress folder with a text editor, and enable mouse control if you want it.
3. If you're upgrading from a previous version of this pack, run the 'copy my data' script with both versions next to each other in a folder.
4. See the links menu in the new GUI for a lot of useful links

Unzip the download into a folder somewhere on your computer (like on your desktop), then go in and run "Lazy Newb Pack.jar" in the top level of the folder.  You'll need java installed.  Adjust options and graphics to your liking and click "Start Dwarf Fortress!"

If you have chosen the "Peridexis etc etc." pack, then you need to unzip/unpack it. If you have a program like winzip or winrar it should automatically open when you double click the file, then just unpack it in a folder (don't use c:/programm files/) and then it is installed and you can run it with the "lazy nemb pack.jar" file.
