How to not freeze to death?
« on: August 15, 2013, 11:12:21 am »

Hi all,
I'm a long time DF player, but I don't know everything about the game, hence why I need help. I am currently using Masterwork Mod, although this question probably applies to Vanilla too:

How do you counter the effects of freezing? (I.e. not being frozen while in water, but freezing while above or below ground)

Currently, I am in the caverns, and once I get to the second layer I get the message 'You are freezing', which I haven't seen before, let alone seen in the caverns.
For what its worth, I am wearing a full set of clothing including 2 pairs of leather gloves under a mix of chainmail and plate armour. Yet one of my hands got partial frostbite..

Any help and advice is appreciated

Press "g" then choose "make a campfire".  You'll have to warm yourself next to a fire every once in awhile.

There's probably something going wrong. Underground squares have a fixed temperature, it shouldn't be possible to freeze in caverns. Are water sources frozen?

No, or at least, I didn't find any water whatsoever in my relatively brief exploration. At least I found now evidence of ice or water while I was exploring, but I left shortly after my hand got frost bitten. I came down with a fever and frequently suffered from nausea until I got to the surface and rested.

I've gone back and explored with another adventurer to test and explore some more, and after some lengthy exploration of the second cave layer, I have found 2 cave floaters corpses.
I've never fought cave floaters at all, in fortmode or adventure, but the wiki says they are syndrome creatures - Is it possible my freezing adventurer somehow got contaminated by a cave floater syndrome? I wasn't aware freezing/frostbite was a syndrome...

I don't know about adv.mode, but in the latest masterwork you need at least one piece of fur clothing to counter freezing climates in fort mode. How to get one? Good question. :)

Cave floater syndrome causes fever nausea and dizzyness the frostbite may have been a glitch. Underground squares have a fixed temperature, an underground square on a glacier map is no colder than an undergroudn square on a desert map.

As far as I know, frostbite doesn't exist in vanilla, so it's most probably related to the mod you're using.
My guess would be that you need a specific type of clothing to counter it, or as someone said, use a campfire every once in a while.

I love this community. Somebody asks "hay guise how do i tame shark", and then everybody is like "why don't we fling sharks at things with complex mechanical devices?".

Yes it does, it just has to be very cold.

C:\Users\Chris\Downloads\df_34_11_win_s>grep -iR frostbite *

C:\Users\Chris\Downloads\df_34_11_win_s>grep -iR frost.bite *
Binary file Dwarf Fortress.exe matches

C:\Users\Chris\Downloads\df_34_11_win_s>

Confirmed as far as the string "frost-bite" being present in the executable three times.

omg, this is old and a necro, but the question was unanswered, so here we go: FUR. You need fur clothing to counter the cold weather in masterwork df, which only exists on glaciers.
