And how much difference is there between a long sword and a short sword?

Well, according to the wiki, the short sword is roughly a third the size of the long sword. I picture the short sword as being like the roman short sword and the long sword being the classic european sword.

yeah but the dwarf fortress wiki mentions that a short sword does less damage then a long sword I want to know how big the difference is.

I think short swords might be better at stabbing than slashing, not sure.

In terms of difference in damage, I don't know.

In the vanilla raws, the short sword has a contact area of 20000 for a slash and 50 for a stab, while the long sword has 60000 for slash and 50 for stab.
So in this case, the long sword is better, as larger contact areas result in more damage - although this is affected by the penetration values.

The penetration value for the short sword is 4000 for a slash and 2000 for a stab.
The long sword's values are: 6000 for a slash and 3000 for a stab.
The higher the value, the more penetration (obviously), and in slashes higher values result in more frequent dismemberment's and decapitations.

So in practice the long sword should be better all round.

BUT the short sword is only size 300, whereas the long sword is size 700. I'm not clear on how size affects things, but it stands to reason that a weapon with a large size, will encumber you if made from a dense material, whereas light weapons of the same material won't.

As for shields, I'm pretty sure there is no penalties whatsoever; if you aren't put off by the cheaty-ness of the tactic, you can carry multiple weapons and shields at once, similar to how you can wear 6-10 cloaks etc.
