Kobold ambushes
« on: November 18, 2013, 10:14:22 pm »

I think I might be doing something wrong, because in my entire 2 years of playing DF, I haven't gotten a single one. They are part of vanilla, aren't they? What conditions have to be met for them to attack?

Supposedly they have to successfully steal enough items. I've never gotten kobold ambushes either, probably because they've never managed to steal anything from my forts. Heck, they never try to steal any of the stuff lying around after a siege or ambush.

i've gotten them a few times. They could never get close enough to steal anything, but they usually escape (these guys can run). after letting enough escape, i start to see ambushes.

Kobold ambushes have the advantage of trap avoid, so they're often better at surprising you. However, kobolds are much weaker than goblins since they're a lot smaller. I remember one time when an ambush attacked a dwarven caravan that just arrived. the guards kicked their asses, i think the best part was when a horse caved a kobold's skull in.

aside from being smaller, they usually don't have much equipment and get slaughtered easily in a battle

I used to see kobolds in general as a joke, something not worth my time worrying about. Then one of their ambushes made it past my traps, a cadre of lookout dogs, my military district filled with roving guards, down a street clogged with traffic, then ambushed members of my legendary citizenry in the middle of my fort.

I lost a legendary mechanic, beekeeper, metalsmith, and had my best farmer/potosh maker in the hospital for a year. The best part of this is, the second they were spotted they got swarmed dogs and torn apart (not before killing a few and taking out afromented dwarves) so fast, my military didn't get there in time.

There is currently a minor problem in that the veteran demons fighting in the corpse factory have failed to die in the 2 year battle and have become legendary unkillable gods of war. I may have misjudged this possible outcome.

I just had my first one yesterday. I was futilely trying to stop a tantrum spiral when they showed up and started shooting the miserable peasants who were punching their fellows trying to drink from the brook. An axedwarf wiped them out easily after blocking a bunch of arrows, which was a nice change from the berserk dwarves that dominated most of her kill list.

The kobolds had managed to steal a couple of artifacts beforehand.

I think I might be doing something wrong because I haven't gotten a single one.

The kobolds only ever ambush you BECAUSE you're doing something wrong. Secure dem loots, bro.

I would rather get ambushed by kobolds than goblins quite honestly.

I think when your fort gets a larger population and worth, kobolds get intimated. But its okay, because Goblins.

Used to be 90% of the kobolds starved during worldgen.

So is it a number of items they have to steal, or a total value, like 10k dwarf bucks or something?

I used to think Kobold ambushes were child's play. Then one of them was lead by a Legendary Bowbold and I took forty arrows to the knee.
Through fortifications.
From 30 tiles away.
Even my own Legendary marksdwarves had trouble taking that little douchebag down, and I had three of them!

Although that was back in like... 2005 or something... a few versions ago anyway, not sure if they still show up with Legendaries ever.

They are the bane of a No-Points Embark's existence.  :P I had one in place of a goblin ambush, and the fuckers went right into the hospital and killed my recovering wounded. After taking out my sole crossbowman.

That bedroom area filled up with coffins right quickly after that.
