Are dwarves extinct in my world?
« on: November 24, 2013, 01:54:05 pm »

Weird stuff has been going on in my world, example when the outpost liaison and the trade caravan got here they just stayed. They have been here for almost a year now at my trade depot. Also after the second migrant wave I never got migrants again. It just says that my fortress attracted no migrants this time. Are dwarves extinct in my world?

Do you have a x3 path for the caravan to leave? Pulling up any bridges will prevent them from leaving.

They got everything they need to leave there just not doing it.

If it's been a year and they haven't left yet normally they'd start going crazy, and the wagons would break down...

Well i guess it doesn't matter anymore because I figured I would go get some adamantine with my glitched fortress and the very first vein I hit leads straight to the circus.

Oh dear, that will do it.  Usually when caravans won't budge for me, I deconstruct the trade depot, and that usually gets them moving.  Usually. Of course, for a couple of years I notice that prices are higher, but sometimes they're literally too stupid to move.

Please do legends to check for if your Civ died?
I don't mean your fort, I mean your mountainhomes

And thus, "The running of the goblins" became an annual tradition and the first dwarven contraceptive.

You civ is not dead: If they were dead, they would have never sent an outpost liason in the first place.

The liason didn't leave probably because your mayor is a working dwarf who worked/slept/drank and never actually had a meeting with the outpost liason. While waiting for a meeting they will linger for years, only leaving when the meeting happens or when the relevant fort leader dies.

The wagon is probably just a bug, deconstruct the depot to deal with it

That's not entirely true. It is possible for your civ to die in worldgen and for the game to not recognize it. Despite having no living members, the civ will continue sending you liasons, caravans and migrants.

The way this happens is, if your civ dies out without being conquered. Worldgen measures which civs are active by whether they have sites left. I had a civ which was mostly wiped out by the elves, then sued for peace; but a few years later, the king was killed by a wild animal, and no new king came to power. Then the general was killed by a wild animal, too. Centuries went by, but because the civ had no members, no other civs attacked it, and so it retained its holdings, and I could embark with it! I looked forward to playing a game as the last seven survivors of the fortress, but nope: the game sent me randomly generated migrants and traders.

I've also had occasions on which dwarfs became extinct (with the exception of necromancers and vampires), but a "dwarven" civilization lived on in the hands of a few goblins which had settled in it centuries before.
