Assassination
« on: November 09, 2013, 02:15:38 pm »

Hi.

Every human civilization I come across seems to have a demon (I.E. zebra brute, web-spitting koala) as a leader.

I tried to kill a couple, but they dodge everything while their little slaves come downstairs to knife me.

Can demons actually even be hit?

With high enough skill and stats on your part, yes.

Thanks. I've been trying to "rescue" a human civilization from a zebra brute, but boy, does he hurt!

If there's a lot of demon-led civilizations, you might try to find an easier one, maybe one that doesn't have a ranged attack. And bring a gang with you (preferably from another civilization, lest they turn on you).

I ran into a squirrel demon posing as a god and got into a long and fierce battle with it. One of my crossbowman shot its leg out, but it killed anyone that came close. I ended up chucking the corpses of my allies at it until it died.

When thinking about confronting a demon, always keep in mind that DF demons are _large_. They have a body size of ten cubic metres, about twice the size of an elephant (according to what i know, that size is standard for them all - a zebra~ and a squirrel demon are of the exact same size). The clothes worn by demons encountered in human settlements (posing as deities) are so thick that weapons will typically bounce right off.

Highly-skilled adventurers can take down "lawgiver" animal demons, but even for an all-around Legendary +10 character, it's a bit of a production. If you're not immensely battle-hardened, you'll need absurd luck to even make a dent. Matters are very different if you chance upon a demon made from a very flimsy material, like ash or snow - those can fall victim to any angry kitten.

@Broken: You're right. I was only thinking about demons encountered as lawgivers, who get hypermassive clothes as armour, which makes them nigh invulnerable (theoretically, you could wrestle clothes off them, but your adventurer would need to have a similar body size for a successful wrestling roll).

(Fleshy) Demons encountered elsewhere, which wear no clothes, pose no more resistance to a solid axe-strike than a giant or ogre. Their high natural combat skills make them much more respectable enemies, but they should be easier to kill than forgotten beasts.

Yes, they are killable. Is just a matter of enough training. Good weapons help, of course, but training is primordial. Remeber that in adventure mode there are not caps in skill levels; The sky is the limit.

Eventually you can do things like this:

Not sure if this will work, but try aiming for their hands.

This, plus the lawgiver ones actually have higher combat skills then normal - level 14 (grand master?) IIRC. So you have to be a legend to take them on.

It might be handy to have foreign companions, so that they don't turn on you when you attack the "glorious leader".

Heh. I hate those clothed demons.

This clearly calls for !!MATH!! :

Kitten corpse + demon face =  ;D me

At least when I download DF on my backup laptop, due to my ancient desktop's completely unrelated breakdown.
