Never say it can't get worse
« on: November 16, 2013, 07:44:54 pm »

While i'm not new to dwarf fortress, I sometimes forget the basics of a proper start. This time, I tried to rush my start to get to the large above ground deposits of native silver my site was dotted with. in my haste i had made a very small plump helmet farm, but had also set 1/2 the year to grow cave wheat. now, with about 3 hours into the game, i noticed that dwarf therapist was showing me a large amount of unhappy dwarves. Seeing that my beer had run out i thought that was the problem, so i set my still to brew all the cave wheat, then went back to moving silver into my forging rooms. Oh was I in for a surprise, Food was gone, dwarves started tossing clothes all over the halls, no beer, no food and to top it all off . . .

I love this game, while I'm sad to say i bought some of the "Plays like dorf fortress" games on steam and what not, They never come close to the fun times actuall dwarf fortress can make.

You may know this already but in case new players read this...

You should plant different crops in separate plots.  If you combine plots, where the same plot is growing cave wheat 1/2 of the year and plump helmets 1/2 of the year, you will lose your final crop of each every time it transitions between them.  In the early years of the fort this can be devestating as it wipes out the seeds as well, and can leave you unable to plant at all.  It's better to have specialized plots that you just leave fallow when not in use.

I thought 'complained about the draft lately' meant they didn't have a door to their room.

Just watching dwarves make poor decisions repeatedly as I fix their little minds...

I haven't checked since I'm not doing bugs until after the release (well, I'm doing bugs, in the additive sense).
