Entropia Universe?
« on: November 17, 2013, 09:31:52 pm »

gonna put this thread here for discussion about this..."game".......or "virtual universe" or whatever is that....

so what's EU?. its a massive multiplayer virtual universe with several planets with different settings with a real money based economy. this means players basically buy gold in the game and can spend it for whatever they want to do, at the same spectrum people can get money in the game and change it to real life cash.

website: http://www.entropiauniverse.com/

i play in "Calypso" the oldest of the planets in the game (it was the first). a very nice planet with very interesting flora and fauna.

entropia has several profesions but its basic focuses are mining, hunting and crafting. there are other services or jobs that players can aim for, from traders, to estilists, to pilots or even land owners.

what more can i say?, well the game looks interesting, but it usually tries to make you pay, since every thing in the game is a money sink (like in real life), you have to keep trying to spend money in order to do most of the things (since in the end all goes to the developers which need to keep developing the game).

it looks strange but it has sense, as this game doesnt has subscriptions or cash shop. well, the only cash is the ingame cash i guess. practically all the economy is based in supply and demand from products dropped or manufactured by players.

of course you dont actually have to pay a dime, you can play "eco" and try to spend as minimum as possible your current money while you get better skills (this game has a long leveling system)......even putting 5$ dollars in the game earns you a considerable amount of ingame cash.

well, now i open for discussion......

IIRC this game is like gambling: you put 5$ and then some grinding hours into it for a chance to multiply or simply lose the amount of money you invested.
It's also very old, I see it like a Second Life but more underground.

Sorry for being negative, but that's what I remember from playing it :P Not sure if it's still too grindy.

yeah its like gambling LOL....i dont know how much has changed since its release, since i have played it only recently... but for what i've played its still random, some days i got more money than what i had initially, while other times i lost what few i made selling stuff....for now looks like the approach right now is going "eco", so that's what im doing, trying to save whatever money i have, i do mostly hunting and sweating, there are missions now, so i have done some of the starter misions and had a good time getting freebies....used it to hunt in the weekend, but now im up sweat gathering again....

note for those that dont know, "sweat" in EU is a life or energy essence that its extracted from living creatures (doesnt include other players, NPCs or machines), its used to create something called mind essence which is used for mindforce (the equivalent of magic in this game)......

its a free resource but due to its free status it has a low price, so you have to farm it in large quantities to make it valuable.....

the key right now is to read some guides, but the best approach is to try to use the most durable items, so you can keep doing your jobs more time, its not like you just throw money at the game and buy the best gear, but actually buy the starter items and keep leveling with them and trying to spend as less as possible, until you have the skills to jump into better stuff...its usually like that. of course, it becomes more expensive as you progress. but im not really interested in the hall of fame, i just want to save enough money for getting good average stuff which i can repair or whatever.......

I agree, already been there.
Just be careful not to get addicted and play it for fun or enjoyment, because they have a rather dangerous formula implemented on this game. At least it was back when I played.

Someone spends 10 USD every month and between that time he tries to multiply the money, but mostly either the player pays more to get another tier, or they feel like they are stuck in the tier they are in.
Or they get really lucky and strike something that makes he jump the tiers, but still he have to maintain himself.

Again - not sure how it plays today but hopefully investing in it manages to give you some returns, instead of keeping you stuck in the same place or something.

This is an online casino with a very thin veneer of gameplay splattered on top. And as with any gambling, the odds are rigged so that the house always wins in the end.

I remember trying it out a long time ago as an experiment, invested a grand total of ten dollars into it.

Had a bit of fun, it's precisely like gambling, except instead of throwing dice, drawing cards or spinning slots, you're killing various creatures for the contents of its stomachs, and boy oh boy are they on a strict diet of sunlight and daisies.

What I didn't have fun with though, is when I came back a second time not too long ago. They did a massive combat rebalance. Suddenly guns that consumes 2-3 charges of ammo now consume twice as much. However to counter balance that, ammo is now worth 0.1 of what it used to. So if your dollar would get you a 100 charges, you'll get a now 1000.

Except for one tiny detail, those 10 or so dollars worth of ammo I had on my char as an experiment? Worth a dollar now. Should have sold it for cash before the update rolled out, no ifs or buts and certainly no 'refunds.'. Not a big loss by any amount, but enough to feel these aren't the kind of thoughtful developers I'd be willing to throw money at.

Which is a real shame because back when I played it, graphically it was an extremely atmospheric game with a real nice flora and fauna design to serve as a backdrop.

well graphics wise the game still seems to be top for that matter, im actually playing in one of the revamped zones of calypso, Cape Corinth, there seems to be a process to visually upgrade the old planets i guess for putting them in the same lvl as the last planets added (Planet Cyrene and Monria Moon).

gameplay wise well, i dont really know, since i've been mostly using TT stuff, they added tiers and amplifications to weapons, but only ranged weapons have amplifications, which are put in special sockets that are unlocked by increasing the tier of the weapon. Limited type weapons teir up really fast and allow to be socketed sooner than the unlimited weapons which require to spend time training them.

as for mining, well, the revamp of cape corinth added a rebalance of resources, according the patch notes it should be more realistic distribution, but i cannot say how much that would've changed since im no miner.

as for money, i've actually havent pay a dime in EU, i just have had luck finding some money to spend, but sweating is always a requirement for non depositors, at least it can be done AFK......
