Rotting Meat
« on: November 09, 2013, 06:39:16 am »

Hey guys, pretty sure I know the answer but I'd just like confirmation anyways, and if I stand corrected then this saves me a lot of time and Miasma.

My Butchers Shop is creating Miasma nearly every embark as I tend to have a lot of returned kills butchered before I set up a food pile, is this literally the cause of it? Just to set up a food pile and have available containers extremely early on?

Even typing this, it does scream out to be the obvious solution to me, but nevertheless confirmation would subside any uncertainty I have.

Thanks in advance.

Yep. Food doesn't rot in a food stockpile, and doesn't even need a container for that. It rots everywhere else. I don't know how early on you're talking about, you might also choose to wait a bit before starting to hunt.

in the worst case set up a temporary food stockpile somewhere in an corridor, the dwarfes dont care walking through their food.
And it prevents rot until your main stockpile is set up.

Yeah thanks, thought it was.

Well the hunter just auto-hunts instantly, do you generally use him as a hauler/crafter for a while as you use up what meat you embark with before turning hunting back on?

I never even thought of that, derp..

Use Dwarf Therapist to disable his Hunting labor if you do not feel prepared to return the kills so early.

And yes, usually just leave them to haul or something. Or as a marksdwarf in your military.

Or, just disable the labor in his View->Preferences->Labors->Hunting&Related screen, which I find to be much quicker and easier than using a 3rd-party tool to do. ...despite the fact that it requires going through four seperate screens to do. Huh.

I always have DT open in the background when I'm playing DF, so then it's just alt-tab + click + alt-tab. Much quicker imho then the native interface. Also, I like being able to handle military + labour in one interface and seeing squad membership while applying labour settings, as I generally sort every migration wave into military (those with miltary skills) and labourers (those without)...
