cover as in make a sort of roof? Well, you can make glass blocks and make a floor with it. It just doesn't let any light through.

Although a glass block floor is the most practical option, a roof of unsupported windows will let light through (I'm like 90% sure) and is much dwarfier. To build unsupported windows, build a floor where the windows will go, build the windows, then deconstruct the floor. You'd have to start with the central windows and work your way out.

It could be argued that _everything_ lets light through, after all, an aboveground tile is considered lit and you can grow aboveground plants there, even if you have a dozen granite floors built above.

Windows and fortifications (and probably grates and bars) can be seen through. You probably could build a ceiling entirely made of fortifications. It'd be a major undertaking and i'm not too sure they're see-through vertically.

Unsupported windows have been covered already. Floor grates and bars can be built instead of floors, but need adjacent floors or walls for support, and i think they regularly check their "supportedness", so you probably won't get away with deconstruction tricks like with windows.

I'm taking 'lets light through' to also mean 'can be seen through'

Fortifications have a floor beneath them I think, so wouldn't work for this idea. I like the 'unsupported window' thing. I might use it myself sometime for skylights or whatever.

Gem windows work exactly like glass windows.

Gem windows work exactly like glass windows.
Except gemmier... And you don't need to piss around with sand and potash and smelting and going through a painful process for clear windows. All hail the red glass ceiling.

Though it's easy when you've got the industry, so go nuts.

I'll post pics in a couple years after I finish it. If I don't flood my fortress first.

Note that gem windows require 3 gems. Also, if you use different color gems, they "twinkle." That is, the window cycles through the colors of the gems.

There is no reason to use glass, other the role-playing. Right now everything is illuminated once natural soil and rock above it is removed.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?
