Embarking with Gator Eggs
« on: November 06, 2013, 12:02:46 pm »

Is embarking with the cave gator eggs a viable option?

If so, would you recommend levelling up an animal trainer, just a few points, on the one of the first 7 dwarves? Or just hope that one of the migrants has it?

Any and all advice is appreciated, currently loving this game, even if my fortresses get obliterated daily.

I'm a beginner but I'm under the impression that you do need a life female Alligator to lay on the eggs constantly for them to be able to hatch. So I don't think that will work.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but that makes sense.  If poultry is upset enough by the presence of dwarfs to de-fertilize eggs, then a trip in a wagon should be out of the question.

changing the [PET_EXOTIC] tag to [PET] sometimes gets you unexpected pets. Dorfs and humans then acquire pets like the elves do, from anything nearby, depending on the biomes where your mountainhomes are, instead of only from the domestic list.

I can confirm that eggs you can embark with are only good for food.  Sorry no spending a few points on eggs and geting a full breeding stock of whatever animal.   If you want to breed an egg layer you need the female to lay them in the next box,  a male of the species on the map, and keep the dwarves away from the nest/mother to be untill they hatch, otherwise they wont.

Eggs selected from the 'Eggs' section on embark are non-fertile food items. In fact, any eggs not in a nest box will never hatch, so if your dwarves collect them as soon as they've been laid, you'll never get offspring.

In order to hatch, eggs need to be laid by a female of the species who has claimed a nest box, and the eggs must remain in the nest box for the duration. I'm not certain, and I'd be careful about doing anything with the mother once she's laid the eggs, too - no slaughtering as soon as more are waiting to hatch, for example.

Bonus info: Do not put the male alligator into the same room as the mother gator, in my case it reverted to wild and killed the female... So much for a little happy family. Not that alligator are that in the wild, but still.
