Magic System
« on: October 29, 2013, 03:41:54 pm »

Hello all,

This is my first time posting so if I have made a faux pas please let me know. I read a old thread about possible magic systems and thought of a interesting idea. Legendary items produce magic. This magic can be used for spells but items and carvings in each artifact change the dwarfs attributes and personality proportional to the amount he/she drew in. IE: if magic is drawn in from a legendary artifact created from a murdered dwarf it would make the wizard more likely to go insane by changing the personality of the dwarf. Then some Evil magic artifacts would have to be stored in a lead or gold vault and sealed away to make your magic dwarfs not draw power from them. Magic skill could be divided into different skills for example enchanting, evocation, summoning, and power drawing. The effect of each of those skills is dependent on the personality of the wizard except for power drawing which effect how much magic a wizard can hold and how quickly they can draw power in.

There's already a baker's dozen different threads on magic. Also, the suggestion forum is generally regarded as an acceptable location for thread necromancy, unless the thread's locked... I think. Hopefully Footkerchief or one of the other suggestion forum veterans can correct me on that if I'm wrong.

My advice would be to discuss this in one of the magic-system threads that's already going. You'll probably get more attention to your idea that way.

I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

I've seen people get flak for not using the search function, and then later get flak for necro-ing a 9month old thread.

I was originally going to post in a old thread but didn't know what was appropriate.

When in doubt, consult the subforum guidelines ^^

Yeah, in most other subforums the peanut gallery will appear if you necro threads. But generally, here in the suggestions forum you're allowed to do so and are, in fact, actively encouraged to if the idea is worthwhile! See the subforums guidelines... As Manveru just mentioned.

And if someone still gives you grief, you can gently point them to those same subforum guidelines and politely tell them to shut up.

anyway, to get back to the actual topic and not forum chicanery!
there was a fairly extensive discussion about magic from artifacts in one of the DF talks and I believe the overall message was that Toady wants them to be magical for a reason, not just because the game arbitrarily says they are (like a god has to bless it or somesuch) and also artifacts might have a condition or otherwise be dangerous, who knows when this will actually be implemented, I think the general idea is get the general metaphysics of the whole world sorted first so things can make sense.  But on the topic of magical dwarves, I think the idea of personality affecting the magical effects/what they can do is cool, but seems inconsistent with the fact that the type of artifact has nothing to do with their skills, also if you dont want adwarf to draw power from an evil artifact why not just destroy the artifact rather than locking it away?

Well the idea is that over time an artifact will change the personality of the user and therefor the effects of their magic. Also creating a vault is one way of dealing with the problem. Also how easy are artifact items destroyed? An "Evil" Item could be useful in a pinch if you don't have very many other artifacts but would have to be used sparingly. Anyway the reason I thought this was a interesting idea is that magic couldn't be planed out like industry as your artifacts are generated by moods and magic by personality  but at the same time it would be predictable and rare.

About the only way to destroy an artifact is by atom smashing it, as far as I know. I don't even think they melt. Building destroyers can't ever destroy an artifact building (door, table, etc.) and I'm pretty sure that artifact wooden thingies that get set on fire burn for longer than your fort will be alive.

You know what?
We need a stickied Magic Discussion Thread just so that new magic threads stop flowing in and we have one place to discuss magic additions at all times.
Seems simple enough to set up and should stop unneeded magic threads popping up.
