since it has become kinda boring to always play against random people on the net, I tried I'd take a look if perhaps the people of bay12 would be interested in playing riichi mahjong.
What is Mahjong:
Mahjong is a tile-based gamble, which for the lack of better words, can be compared to poker, with 13 cards in your hand.
Using strategy and luck, the players take turns trying to form hands that fullfil the conditions for winning and make some points at that.
The rules of the game seem rather complicated and confusing at the first glance. Yes, they scare most new players away.
However, I assure you, the actual GAMEPLAY rules are very simple. It usualy only takes a try or two to understand them.
these rules can be found here:
http://mahjongtime.com/mahjong-japanese-rules.htmlor with fancy media:
http://mahjongtime.com/demonew.htmlWhat was that about scoring again ?The complete scoring rules can be found here:
http://www.ofb.net/~whuang/ugcs/gp/mahjong/mahjong.htmlas these are pretty complicated, always feel free to sue handy tools, such as this
http://jbcs.info/Mahjong/hand/calculator.htmlor dont use them. the website we will be using calculates the score automaticaly anyway.
the only thing that you need to know that in order to complete a hand, you will need at least one yaku.
yaku are combinations which determine the value of your hand. usualy the more the better, but you have to make sure that you have at LEAST one of them.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong_yaku#List_of_yakuI have seen many beginners who were just focusing on gathering combinations (chis and pons. if you have read the rules by now, you will understand), without focusing on getting even a single yaku. they were very confused and angry as to why they were not allowed to finish their hand.
And how will we play this? For easy play, we will be using the flash-based client Tenhou. No need to download any programms (except possibly flash)
The lobby we will be using is
http://tenhou.net/0/?L7447do not be confused by the fact that the entire thing is japanese. To play the game, you dont have to be able to read.
All you need is the info on how to login:
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/login.htmlThe info which button means which game:
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/lobbies-games.htmland a little bit about the gameplay:
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/gameplay.htmlconsider all of these links luxury. I started playing on tenhou without them. And hey, I made it anyway.
But Akroma, with whom shall I play, and when ?For the sake of simple player-finding, I will gather a list of all those who are interested, including their time-zones. With a little luck, we will gather enough players from europe, the USA and australia to cover most timezones, so nobody will have to get up at 5 am to play mahjong with the others.
Once the list is sizable enough, anyone who wishes to play can simply send out PMs to players in convenient time-zones and call them to the lobby. At the beginning, I will be doing that a lot, to introduce as many players as possible, but keep in mind you guys do not HAVE to wait for me to invite you. Feel free to send out invites whenever you please.
Keep in mind that while 4 players are ideal, tenhou supports 3-player games
Will we be keeping a score, to grow our e-peen ?At the end of a session, the final scores will be displayed, and right next to them are blue and red numbers. those are perfect for keeping score. At the end of a game, it would be very nice if someone would post them, so I can add them to the list.
