[DOMESTIC] Tag changes
« on: October 19, 2013, 12:16:01 am »

A suggestion to give us a choice in what our civs have as domesticated animals.

Remove the [Common_Domestic] tag from creatures, and instead make it an entity tag that consists of the following: [DOMESTIC:"CREATURE":"RARITY"], where "RARITY" is either FORCED, COMMON, UNCOMMON or RARE and "CREATURE" is the unique creature ID.

For example the entry for the Dwarf entity would have added:

...
[DOMESTIC:CAT:FORCED]
[DOMESTIC:HORSE:FORCED]
[DOMESTIC:DOG:FORCED]
[DOMESTIC:ALPACA:COMMON]
[DOMESTIC:CAMEL_2_HUMP:RARE]
...

And Goblins would have, amongst others:

...
[DOMESTIC:TROLL:FORCED]
[DOMESTIC:BEAK_DOG:COMMON]
[DOMESTIC:WOLF_ICE:RARE]
...

That would allow us to have so much more direct control over how our modded civs turn out.

Has that ever happened before?

I like the idea of having more control over precisely which creatures are used by a civ, though if every creature had to be individually designated in this way it could result in some massive and cluttered entity files.

Perhaps the creatures themselves could be given a tag not unlike the [CREATURE_CLASS] used for syndromes, and have entities use creatures based on that.

So, common domestic animals would be, like, [PET_CLASS:COMMON_DOMESTIC], or whatever it would be called, and in the standard entity that's what would be used.

Or, maybe both methods could be acceptable - make some basic groups of creatures for a civ to use, then add a handful of special ones manually?

Unfortunately, this could result in some strange things like civ's having domestic animals that don't even live anywhere in their nearby area.

Like rabbits in Australia?
Mind you they are widespread now but DF doesn't simulate animals escaping from their civ yet, so it's not unrealistic.

Something like this would be good. I'd like to be able to give dwarves different domestic animals to humans.

Could always add a biome qualifier. For example, [DOMESTIC:WOLF_ICE:TUNDRA:COMMON], where if your civ is present in the TUNDRA biome, it treats WOLF_ICE as COMMON. Otherwise it would ignore it.

Suggestions like this have come up a few times, either in a dedicated thread, or as part of an attempt to create a megathread for tokens and raw changes. I wouldn't be surprised to see this happen eventually, and obviously I'd be all for it. Here's a probably incomplete list of similar threads:

Certain creatures should not be exotic for certain races
small domestic overhaul
Domestication tags

I'll toss my approval at this one - I'm always up for more tag expansion.
