coming off of the wiki, i thought i'd try my hand at breeding, well, anything that laid eggs. i wrangled myself up some tame cave crocodiles and stuck them in a room with a forbidden nest box as to dissuade nest raiders aaaaaand...nothing. the crocs refused to lay eggs in the forbidden nest boxes. in fact, the second i had unforbidden the nest boxes, they sat their scaly rumps in those boxes and went to work, upon which the eggs were taken and eaten. i had tried to, say, put them in a room with a locked and forbidden door but that doesnt seem to work either, should i just wall the suckers in and cross my fingers?

tl;dr, cant breed crocs, wiki couldnt help me, wat do?

Disble eggs from stockpiles so dwarf wont take the egg away unless for eating. Wait for the egg to be laid then forbid the eggs.

Note that long brewding animals may not breed at all there was a bug somewhere.
Test with something simpler first

i...it never occurred to me to simply not give the eggs a place to go. i have been successful in the past, which is why this frustrates me so. i will try again and post post haste. thanks are in order friend

EDIT: i am the proud father of...29 cave croc hatchlings. goddamn i forgot how big those egg clutches could be

i had over 100 hatch at one point (4 females 1 male) i could bring them with me on embark.
they make a great meat industy plus you can put them all in one cage pull the trigger and watch the crocsplosion

You can also obsessively watch the nest boxes for when eggs are laid, and just forbid the eggs. But yea, best way to do mass breeding is by having no stockpiles with eggs on and possibly also not allowing them for cooking (if you intend to hatch them multiple times). IIRC eggs won't be eaten raw in vanilla, so they won't even be taken to the kitchen anymore.

ill be honest, pots of cave croc eggs is how i pay for most early caravans, since ive gotten out of making stone crafts. later on i rely on large serrated green glass disks for most of my income, because sand and magma are infinite, and those things are 3k dwarfbucks a pop after you get glassmakers trained

I prefer to lock them in a mass room for breeding. If the dwarves can't get in, they don't take the eggs, so a locked door works just fine.
